What are Runescape Private Servers?

Runescape has many of its own servers that it uses to support gameplay. These are owned by Jagex, the creators of Runescape, and are operated by Jagex staff. Runescape private servers, on the other hand, are run by ordinary players like you and me. Runescape private servers still run Runescape, except a Runescape private server is able to make some customizations and control who is allowed on or not.

Playing on Runescape private servers is not actually playing Runescape competitively. Any items you obtain exist in that server only seeing as they can be modified. This is a feature that Jagex and many other games (such as WoW) implement to prevent someone from hosting Runescape on their own server, racking up items, then going back to the official servers where 99.9% of the user base plays and having an unfair advantage.

Pros and Cons of Runescape Private Servers

Some say that Runescape private servers will take the MMO right out of MMORPG. Why? No one is able to play on the Runescape private server except for you unless you make heavy modifications. However, if you get a large enough user base, you can have a lot of fun on Runescape private servers. Unlike on the official servers, there are certain commands you can do to modify the game slightly. Obviously the framework of the game stays static, but things such as items can be respawned etc. Anything done in a Runescape private server will not carry back over to the official servers where the vast majority of players are. (Most don't even know Runescape private servers exist.)

Make Your Own Runescape Private Servers

Making your own Runescape private server
is 100% possible, just difficult. If you have never created a website or dealt with web hosting before, it's advised you don't even try because you will get confused very easily. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when setting up Runescape private servers, even for pros.

The Server

The recommended minimum specs for any Runescape private servers are:

-150MB of RAM
-150MB of diskspace (around 100MB required for Java)
-350 MHZ
-Java installed
-A brain

Anything lower than that and you risk Runescape running slowly/being buggy/crashing.

The easiest hosting to use for Runescape private servers in general is Hostgator. They're one of the biggest web hosting companies around and have pretty good prices on Runescape private servers. The icing on the cake is their live support - they usually have at least 50 chat technicians available to chat 24/7. Where you might wait days for a response from other hosting companies, Hostgator can fix you right up whenever you need it. This ensures any Runescape private servers hosted on Hostgator can stay online constantly.

Downloading Runescape

1) Create a new folder on your server's desktop called "Runescape"
2) Download the server and client to your Runescape folder.
3) Extract the contents of the server .rar to a folder within your Runescape folder - call it "Server"
4) Extract the contents of the client .rar to a folder within your Runescape folder - call it "Client"
5) Create a shortcut to the .exe in the Client folder on your desktop for easy access

Downloading Java For Runescape Private Servers

In case you didn't know, Runescape is written in Java. Java is web based which is why you don't need to download Runescape in order to play it. We are going to need to download Java JDK to our server so that our Runescape private servers can recognize and execute the code in those two files you just downloaded.

1) Visit Java's official website and download Java JDK.
2) Install it by running the setup file and agreeing to all prompts until you get to the "install" button
3) Click that and the Java install file will be saved to wherever your default download location is (usually the desktop or downloads folder)
4) Run that file and agree to all prompts until you finish

Almost done. All that's left is configuring Runescape with the Java client to actually make it able to run on your Runescape private servers.

Adding "Client" to Your JDK Folder

1) Find the JDK folder, usually located at C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_05 - if that doesn't work, open up My Computer and find it manually
2) Open the "bin" folder
3) Copy all files from your "Server" folder to the "bin" folder
4) All files in folder should be roughly 1.45 MB
5) Double click the file named Compile in your "bin" folder and let it run for about a minute. 6) Create a shortcut for the file named Run (has a .bat extension) on your desktop.

Final Steps - Logging In

1) Close everything and go to your desktop
2) Double click on the "Run" shortcut you created and minimize the window that pops up
3) Double click on the "Client" shortcut and you should recognize the login screen
4) Put your username to anything you want and your server to 127.0.0.1
5) Hit login and start playing

That's it! You should be in Varrock on one of your own Runescape private servers. Feel free to use the admin commands I listed above to cause absolute mayhem on any of the Runescape private servers you operate.

We are not affiliated with Runescape or Jagex Ltd. in any way. Play Runescape on the official servers by clicking that link. Our Runescape private servers are online 99% of the time.
